Notes on Ruby Dome, Nevada.  July, 2004 by Richard L. Carey.

This peak is the highpoint of Elko County and is also on the Desert Peaks List.

Ruby Dome and most of the normal hiking route up Hennen Canyon is in the Humboldt National Forest in
Elko County, Nevada. The starting point for the hike is in a private campground owned by the Spring Creek
Homeowners Association. The Association allows others to camp there for a fee. It is quite helpful to camp
there since there is no convenient place close by for camping and it is easier to get an early start for this long climb.

From the main street in Elko take 5th or 12th streets south to highway 227 and follow it over a pass out to
Spring Creek, a sprawling and fast-growing community. On 227 turn north (left) on Spring Creek Parkway
and drive 2.3 miles to the Homeowners Association office on your left. The address is 451 Spring Creek
Parkway and their phone number is: 775-753-6295. Office hours are: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mon. - Fri.

The campground fee is $10.00 per person per night with a $25.00 key deposit. Ask for a map of the campground
too. If you should return after their normal office hours you can return the key by dropping it in a mail slot in the door.
Your $25.00 deposit will be returned by mail if you left your home address. The folks are very friendly and appreciate
the extra business. Campground spaces are not reservable so it's first come first served.

To get to the campground drive back out to highway 227 and continue east to Pleasant Valley Road. Drive south
on this road which soon turns to good, graded dirt. At 3.1 miles where the road makes a bend, stop at the gate on
your left. Open the gate and then lock it behind you and drive the 1.2 miles up to the last and highest campsite
(#28) if it is available. There are restrooms and picnic tables, but the water is labelled as non-potable. The trail starts
right at this site, but there is no sign marking it. If this site is occupied move down to the next one available.

Maps are available at the Humboldt Forest office in Elko which you pass by on route 227. The office is at 2035 Last Chance Road
which is next to the Toyota dealer off route 227. Maps are also available downtown at: The Map House on 421 Court St. They
have a large selection of maps. Tele: 775-738-3108. www.chilton-inc.com  Forest Service maps will be much cheaper at
the Forest office, but they have other maps not available elsewhere.
