This is a route file for a climb of the highpoint of the Coxcomb
Mountains in the eastern end of Joshua Tree National Park.  The peak
is on the Sierra Club, Desert Peaks List and has been unofficially
known as Spectre Peak.  There are two nearby summits that are often
climbed on the same trip and they are Aqua BM and Dyadic.  Aqua BM is
shown on the topo map, but Dyadic is not.  It is a harder 5th class
summit southeast of Spectre and almost as high. The trailhead is on
highway 62 east of Twentynine Palms at a point 0.2 miles west of milepost
73. This is a sandy wash with a gate on the south side of the road
and is waypoint SPEC01.  A nearby place to camp is 3/4 mile east on
the north side of the highway at SPEC00.
Hike the old road south for 4.2 miles to the base of a steep canyon at
SPEC04. Ascend a steep, boulder-filled canyon up to a place where
it levels off a bit (SPEC05) and then continue south with a short
descent into a series of small washes.  Climb higher to a place west
of AQUA BM at SPEC 09.  Head south across a high basin to a point on
the east side of Spectre (SPEC10).  The climb up the east side is fairly
easy 3rd class. The position of the other two summits is given.
From the highway to the summit is 5.7 miles with about 3000 feet of gain.
The round-trip hike without doing any other summits can be done in
about 9 to 10 hours.  An easier alternative is to backpack to the base
of the mountain and camp.  There is no water at this spot. The topo
