A good map for this route is #2, called Vysoke Tatry at a 1:25,000 scale. This is a route file for the climb of Mt. Rysy, the highest point in Poland, located in about the center of the High Tatras. This climb starts on the south at the village of Strbske Pleso in Slovakia. These are actual waypoints from a climb done on September 17, 2003, led by Matej Sanitrar. Waypoint RY00 is at the Hotel FIS where we stayed. The trailhead at 1360 meters is waypoint RY01 south of the hotel on a road leading to a sanitorium. The trail is well-used and goes north through the forest. At RY02 go left at a junction. At RY03 the trail is on a ledge with good views. At RY04 the trail meets a road. Follow signs and go left here. After a climb reach the Zabie Plesa Lakes at RY06 at about 1930 meters. Above the lakes are chains along a sloping ledge. The Chata pod Rysmi hut is at 2245 meters. Above the hut is a saddle at 2345 meters. It is about another 30 minutes from there to the top. The route has a gain of about 1140 meters and takes about 4 1/2 to 5 hours one-way. Allow 8 to 9 hours for the round-trip. 9/2003 RLC
