The GPS ignores this text when loading route. This is a route to Maturango Peak from the east side. On highway 178 drive 14.0 miles north of the Inyo County line sign north of the town of Trona. Turn left on Nadeau Road (MAT00). Drive 5.9 miles and turn left onto a fair dirt road (MAT01). After 3.5 miles stop and park at the wilderness boundary sign (MAT02). Hike west up the old road in Bendire Canyon. Follow the road as it bends right and then ends (MAT03). Climb up a steep slope on the left to a ridge top (MAT04). Follow an old trail into the canyon through some brush. Continue up the canyon and note several junctions. (MAT05 and MAT06). A campsite at about 6950ft.is at waypoint CAMP. Continue in the canyon to a cairn at MAT08 and go a short distance further and then turn left up the slopes. A rest stop is a bench at MAT09. This peak is usually done as a backpack because of the distance. From the boundary to CAMP is 6.6 miles with a 4100ft. gain. From CAMP to the summit is 1.6 miles with 2000ft. of gain. There is generally no reliable water on the route. 4/2004 RLC
