The GPS ignores this text when loading route. This route was used to climb Kern Peak in the southern Sierra. The peak is a former lookout site and is on the list of the hundred most prominent peaks in California. From highway 395 about 15 miles north of Inyokern go west on the paved road to Kennedy Meadows. Continue on Forest Road 41 to the Blackrock Ranger Station. Pick up a Wilderness Permit here for overnight trips. From the Ranger Station go north for eight miles on route 21S03 to the Blackrock trailhead. In the springtime this route may be closed due to snow so it is best to call the Cannell Meadows Ranger Station in Kernvile to find out if the road is open. The number is:760-376-3781. The trailhead is a large paved area and camping is OK. From here hike north descending to Casa Vieja Meadows (KERN01). Cross the creek and go north toward Redrocks Meadow. Signs are in this area. The trail goes up and down through open forest. There are some downed trees you will have to work around. River Spring (KERN05) is a good source of water. One could camp near here and do the peak the next day. We went on to a nice camp area at Redrocks Meadow (KERN06). Water is available here from two streams. From here head north to a pass (KERN07) and leave the trail heading west up to a long ridge. Travel is easy along the ridge to the base of a rocky talus slope on the southeast side of the peak. KERN10 is at the base and KERN11 is at the top. From here head north on the west side of the ridgetop to the summit (KERN12). There is a register and remains of a lookout structure. The hike from trailhead to the camp is 8.9 miles with a gain of about 1700ft. The camp is almost the same elevation as the trailhead. From the Redrock camp to the summit it is 4.8 miles with a gain of 3000ft. This makes a nice two night backpack. It has been done as a long dayhike which would be 27.6 miles round-trip with 4700ft. of gain. 10/06 RLC Maps: Kern Peak, 1:24,000, 1994 (The summit is on this map.)
