The GPS ignores this text when loading route. These waypoints were taken during a climb of Mt.Katahdin on 19 September, 2001. This route file starts from the trailhead at the Roaring Brook Campground and follows the Knife Edge ridge to Mt. Baxter, the highest point of Katahdin. The trailhead is at a sign just north of the Ranger Station. Head west and after about 0.2 miles there is a sign for the Helon Taylor trail (KATA01). Take this trail which heads south up through the forest. KATA02 is a flat area which does not seem to match the topo map. At KATA03 the trail crosses the upper part of Avalanche Brook which was dry in September. The tree line ends near KATA04 by a large boulder. There is a long, steep scramble up to Pamola Peak which will take about three hours to reach. From here there is a steep down climb to a notch before Chimney Peak. The route then goes up through the rock past Chimney Peak and the Knife Edge ridge begins. Stay on top of the ridge and follow the blue paint marks to South Peak (KATA06). From here it is nearly flat on the rocks over to the big cairn at Baxter Peak. An easier route down is to go north to the signed saddle (KATA08) then go east down to Chimney Pond campground. From here there is a well-worn trail back to Roaring Brook. This route to Baxter takes about 4 1/2 to 5 hours and should only be done in good weather. The return via the saddle takes about 3 1/2 hours.
