The GPS ignores this text when loading route. Apache Peaks at 6940 ft. is north of Globe, Arizona in the central part of the state. It has 2580 ft. of prominence and is on the list of Arizona's 50 top peaks. The peak can be climbed from the west side. On highway 60 west of Globe turn north on route 88. After about 6.4 miles turn right on Wheatfield Road (not signed). This is old state road 88 and there is a sign for Bernie's Steakhouse. After 1.8 miles turn right onto Hicks Road and in a very short distance turn left staying on Hicks Road. Follow this north past a ranch and at 4.1 miles there is a gate on your right. Sign in here(APAC00). This is road 219 and it follows a wash northeast. After 1.9 miles turn right onto 220 (APAC01). This is sandy, but firm enough that most 2WD vehicles with high-clearance should make it. At 4.9 miles from the gate there is another gate and corral at Procopio Spring. Four-wheel drive is needed soon after this. I drove to 5.8 miles on the odometer and parked before another gate. More adventurous drivers could continue. I hiked the road to an upper junction near Cherry Spring (APAC04) and went right and then soon headed off the road (APAC05) north onto brushy slopes. Waypoint APAC06 is on the slope and APAC07 is a gap in the cliff that leads to a higher plateau. The summit is at the south end of a small forested mesa. There is a benchmark and register. The route is 5.6 miles round-trip with a gain of 2600 ft. If you drive all the way to Cherry Spring (APAC04) about 3 miles and 800 ft. of gain can be eliminated. 9/2006 RLC Maps: Chrome Butte, 1:24,000, 1966 (The summit is on this map.) Rockinstraw Mountain, 1:24,000, 1986 (Most of the approach hike is on this.)
