A recent view of Signal Peak. Extensive work was done on rebuilding the stairs and deck in the summer of 2010. The C-3 type lookout is a 14ft. by 14ft. hip-roofed wood cab sitting atop a 10ft. by 10ft. concrete block base constructed in 1951. The wood shingle roof has been replaced with a steel roof with 18 solar panels. The lookout uses propane and solar power with storage batteries as the primary power source. This lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register #639. Photo by Richard Carey on September 9, 2010
Signal Peak Lookout was formerly called Devil Peak. There was a lookout building here constructed in 1911 which was rebuilt in 1926. The current lookout is staffed during the fire season by Sierra National Forest employees. Photo by Fred Johnson October 10, 2002.
The primary benchmark is probably the building itself. This reference mark is on the cement walkway near the stairway. Placed in 1945. Datasheet: HR2849
